MEET THE DESIGNER
What do you do if there is no child's swing that suits your needs? You design your own! The designer and father Anton Stenfors founded his own label Lillagunga "little swing" and reconsidered every child's favorite piece: the children's swing. The range grew quickly, and now you can find them alongside the classic Swings other timeless indoor and outdoor products such as gymnastic rings and trapeze made of high quality oak and walnut - designed and produced in Finland.
Dear Anton, the swing is a very old product that has not lost its popularity over the years. What made you rethink the children's (& adult) classics?
Yes that's right. There is plenty of historical evidence to show that the outdoor swing has been around in Ancient Greece since 1450 BC. BC, so it has been with us humans for a long time - and for good reason. When I was a child, I swung a lot with my sister and when my own children got old a real swing had to be made. Since I couldn't find a functional, attractive wooden swing, I designed my own - and that's how it all began. A swing is a fantastic invention and I believe it is Lillagunga has managed to revive its popularity a little.
Lillagunga celebrates worldwide success with the great swings, was it difficult to reconcile fatherhood and career?
Right! And we are very happy about that. It was also amazing to see that all of our products are so popular, regardless of the country. I would say that the balancing act between my role as a father and work was not always easy, especially at the beginning - because the company took up a lot of time and energy. Looking back, I think I did it well, but of course there were times when I wondered if I was taking on too much responsibility all at once.
Is there another children's product that you think should be redesigned?
We bring at least one new product onto the market every year - and are currently in the final stages of development with at least two products that will expand and strengthen our portfolio. I think there are tons of classic activity toys out there that could be reinvented and improved in so many ways. What we strive for is to combine functionality with appealing design in order to create high quality products, and so far we have been successful with it.
