City trip with children to Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, the charming capital of Portugal, is not only a worthwhile travel destination for adults, but also for families with children. The city offers a wealth of activities and sights that will delight little explorers. In this blog post we give an overview of child-friendly Lisbon and share some valuable tips for a successful city trip to the Portuguese metropolis with your children.

The climate - on the sunny side

The climate in Lisbon is Mediterranean, with mild winters and warm summers. The beautiful city can be visited (almost) all year round. The best time for a short trip with children to Lisbon from April to June or September to October, when the weather is pleasant and the flow of tourists is a little less. In midsummer, the thermometer likes to climb above 30 degrees, which might be too high for a trip to the city with children. Despite the heat, the portuguese port city is blowing mostly a pleasant breeze. All in all, you can visit the city as a family almost all year round.

Sights: Experience Lisbon with children

Lisbon offers a wealth of activities and sights for children of all ages. From historical monuments and bustling streets to scenic parks, delicious treats and fun transportation the Portuguese capital offers an unforgettable experience for the whole family. Normally you discover the city on foot, but we can with children Highly recommend Uber rides, since the costs are very manageable (approx. 5 euros for a 12-minute drive). Here are our tips for excursions with children in Lisbon:

Oceanàrio de Lisboa – second largest aquarium in the world

The oceanarium (Oceanário de Lisbon) is an impressive sea aquarium on the former Expo site and an absolute highlight for families visiting Lisbon. It is located in Parque das Nações, a modern neighborhood on the banks of the Tagus River.

The Oceanarium is one of the largest aquariums in Europe and is home to a wide variety of marine habitats and species from different parts of the world. The open ocean is simulated in the huge main tank. Sharks, rays and a variety of colorful fish species can be admired here.

For families with children there is the oceanarium many interactive elements and activities. Kids can explore different aquariums where they can touch fish or learn about starfish and other sea creatures.

The Oceanarium is a interesting destination for the whole family and offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the fascinating world of the sea. Tip: An Cable car goes directly to the oceanarium, your kids will love the drive there. And in the oceanarium there is probably that most beautiful museum shop - a real highlight.

The tram line 28

The famous old Tram 28 is one of the most famous tram lines in Lisbon, Portugal and a must-see for visitors to the city. It takes a scenic route through narrow streets, steep hills and historic districts (including Alfama, the oldest district) and offers a unique way to Lisbon to explore.

Tram line 28 stretches from Martim Moniz Square in the heart of the city to the Campo Ourique district. During the journey, the tram passes narrow streets, steep hills and historic districts that give Lisbon its unique charm. The wood paneling, the squeaky brakes and the rattling noises give a feeling of a bygone era.

Tip: If you are staying at the Martinhal Chiado, you can easily take line 28 from the station Pç. Luis Camões drive to the beautiful park Jardim da Estrela, just near the hotel. Get off at the big church (Basilica da Estrela), just opposite is the entrance to the park with a café and a large playground for different age groups. Definitely the tram use first thing in the morning to avoid the tourist crowds.

Elevadores, Lisbon's elevators and viewpoints

Another highlight for children are the elevators Elevadores, from one neighborhood to the nextEspecially that Santa Justa Elevator in the Baixa district is highly recommended. From up here you have a spectacular view over the whole city. Portugal's city of the seven hills offers a wonderful overview in many places. Of the Miradouros (viewpoints) offer a wonderful view of the beautiful city and reward yourself with a coffee or something to eat after the ascent. We visited the Miradouros St. Luiza and the Miradouros da Senora viewpoint.

During a tour of the old town we have a tour with a TukTuk from Mon Ami Tours undertaken - unfortunately a bit expensive at about 60 euros for one hour. But it was worth it with the children, because the tired little feet could recharge their batteries and we relaxedly reached the beautiful viewpoint Miradouros da Senora.
